Mike, Halpin's lead Mechatronics researcher, joined the team on a part-time basis in June 2014 becoming a full-time fixture in September 2016. Before embarking on a career in research, Mike co-founded the first Unmanned Aircraft Systems venture in Ireland to offer data collection, training, and R&D consultancy services, where he was technical director and senior training facilitator. This foray into entrepreneurship followed a twenty-one year aviation career, almost half which was spent based in Cork piloting helicopters to the nearby Kinsale Head gas field, after a five year stint as an Electronics Engineer working in the North Sea, the Gulf of Suez, the South China Sea and around the UK coast on Marine Seismic and Geophysical ships. Mike hold an Honours BSc degree in Electronics Engineering and an MSc in Computers in Commerce and Industry.
