Rob is a research scientist at the Offshore Safety and Survival Centre (OSSC), Marine Institute of Memorial University, Canada. He has 20 years experience in the planning, conduct and dissemination of applied research and has led research at the OSSC since 2003. During this time his research has focussed on examining human and equipment performance during the processes of evacuation, survival and rescue at sea, ranging from model scale laboratory-based testing to ethics approved human performance research at full scale. ICUFRob holds a Ph.D from the University of Greenwich in London (human performance during evacuation for large passenger ships), and is a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) registered in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. While at |NMCI, Rob is developing a research collaboration between NMCI and OSSC in the area of passenger ship safety. His visit is funded through the James M. Flaherty Research Scholarship from the Ireland Canada University Foundation, with the assistance of the Government of Canada/avec l’appui du gouvernement du Canada.

Dr. Kumar was appointed the USMMA Academic Dean on January 27, 2007. He is the 12th person to hold the Dean’s position at the Academy. In that capacity, he oversees all academic departments, professional development and career services, Registrar’s office and the dean’s office. FulbrightHe has also served three terms as the Academy’s Interim Superintendent. Prior to joining USMMA, Dr. Kumar was the founding Dean of the Loeb-Sullivan School of International Business and Logistics at Maine Maritime Academy. He earned an unlimited Master Mariner (U.K.) certificate of competency and sailed extensively before entering academe. His areas of teaching and research include Maritime Economics, International Business Logistics, and Maritime Logistics. He is a founding member of the International Association of Maritime Economists and the International Association of Maritime Universities, and an Educator Member of the American Society of Transportation and Logistics.
